My boys and I traveled back home to my family in New England this October. They finally got to see my hometown in Massachusetts for my absolute favorite season. There’s truly nothing quite like a New England Fall.
Traveling can be hectic as it brings in a lot of vata energy, and that can leave one vulnerable to germs due to erratic eating and sleeping schedules, long and unpredictable days, and plentiful social activities. And well, I ended up with a bout of bronchitis on my return home to California.
The body has an amazing capacity to heal naturally when given the right things. So I want to share my tea remedy for Bronchitis. This concoction of herbs got me through it quickly and effectively, along with good ol’ rest, a humidifier, and an easily digestible diet full of whole foods and clear nourishing soups with plenty of herbs and spices.
Bronchitis Buster Tonic
Ingredients:
1-inch piece of fresh ginger root, peeled & sliced into thin slices
1-inch pieces of fresh turmeric root, peeled & sliced into thin slices
1 - 2 tsp licorice root
1 - 2 tsp tulsi
1 - 2 tsp thyme
1/2 - 1 Tbsp honey
Directions:
Add the herbs to a quart (32 oz) mason jar, add boiling water and steep for 5-10 minutes.
Strain, add honey when temp is a comfortably warm to hot drinking temperature.
In the thick of my illness, I used 2 teaspoons of these herbs. Once I started to feel like I was on the upswing, I reduced it to 1 tsp of the herbs. I drank this all day long when I was sick making sure the temp was always at minimum warm.
Medicinal Properties
Fresh Ginger & Turmeric Root - both adaptogens, immunity boosters, fever reducers, and decongestants with anti-viral and anti-inflammatory action. Both of these roots are medicinal staples in an Ayurvedic apothecary.
Licorice Root - one of the best herbs for respiratory system ailments like asthma, wheezing, bronchitis, and coughs. Its demulcent quality provides lubrication and nourishment to the mucus membranes and it is a great expectorant. Licorice root is also an immunity booster.
Tusli - rich in volatile oils like camphor, Tulsi acts to open and clear up breathing passages reducing congestion in the chest. Tulsi is also a natural expectorant, it has anti-microbial, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory properties.
Thyme - with its highly aromatic quality from volatile oils like thymol, thyme is considered a powerful first-rate expectorant. In fact it’s often an ingredient in cough drops and cough syrup. It's also anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antispasmodic helping soothe irritated airways.
Honey - a storehouse of phytonutrients with a scraping action that helps dispel mucus, calm an irritated throat, and soothe a cough. **Make sure you add the honey to a comfortably warm-hot drinking temp, not piping hot as this will decrease the medicinal quality of the honey.
